Classroom Lessons

We have a school-wide Social Emotional Learning Program.  SEL is practiced daily during our Morning Meeting Time and I visit each class every other week for a lesson in addition.  You can learn more about this year's Social-Emotional Learning at this link.

I am still a teacher at heart, so one of my favorite things about my job is when I have the opportunity to visit classrooms. Classroom Counseling is for Academic, Career, and Social/Emotional Development of students.  If the social/emotional needs of students are not met, it is difficult for students to be ready and willing to learn. Teachers may request additional lessons on an as needed basis, subject to availability.

Classroom Counseling can be helpful if you are seeing a particular issue in your class.  For example, maybe your students need a lesson on being kind to one another or they may need some help dealing with their emotions or learning about test taking strategies.  Download our Menu of Classroom Lessons by clicking the image on the left or clicking here.   I can also tailor a lesson to the needs of your class.  Just email me with your concerns and what you would like for me to work with your students on and I can customize a lesson specific to the needs of your students!

During Classroom Lessons and Social Stories, it can be beneficial for the teacher to stay present in the classroom so that you know what we have discussed with your class.  However, I ask that you participate more like a student and allow me to be the teacher in the room for that time period.  I will deal with any classroom management issues.   The students will enjoy you being "one of them" for a few minutes and I will be sure to call on you to answer questions!

In addition to these classroom lessons, I can visit your classroom for a social story.  To download a list of social stories, click the image to the right or here.  I use social stories in individual and small group counseling sessions, but I would also love to read with your class or with an individual student or group of students in your class.  If you would like for me to do a social story with your class, this usually takes about 15 minutes.  I will read a book or story to your class and lead a brief discussion after.  I can also leave some suggested follow up activities for you as the teacher (handouts, word work, writing prompts, etc.) to do after we leave.  Social Stories are great, because I use them to teach a specific social skill, but they also can be used to teach academic skills such as new vocabulary, writing, or math skills.
